Thomas Edison Biography is an independent educational publication examining the life, inventions, businesses, colleagues and contested legacy of Thomas Alva Edison.
The site is not affiliated with the Edison family, Thomas Edison National Historical Park, the National Park Service, Rutgers University, the Library of Congress or any museum or commercial organisation. Links to those institutions are included because their collections help readers check the historical record.
What we are trying to do
Edison is often presented as either a lone genius or a convenient villain. Neither picture is enough. His career involved remarkable experiments, organised laboratory teams, investors, skilled employees, patent disputes, commercial failures and decisions that deserve criticism. Our aim is to explain that complicated story in readable language without sanding away uncertainty.
How the articles are researched
We favour primary documents and durable institutional sources: patent records, contemporary newspapers, laboratory notebooks, catalogues, photographs and collections maintained by recognised archives, libraries, museums, universities and public bodies. Substantial articles include a Sources and further reading section so readers can continue the research.
Dates, quotations and disputed claims are checked against more than one dependable source where practical. We distinguish between what Edison personally devised, what his laboratory developed collectively, what was acquired or improved from earlier work, and what later storytelling added to the record.
