Thomas Alva Edison was born in Milan, Ohio, on 11 February 1847 and died at Glenmont in West Orange, New Jersey, on 18 October 1931. Between those dates he worked as a newsboy, telegraph operator, inventor, laboratory organiser, manufacturer and public celebrity.

Childhood and family influence

Edison was the youngest child of Samuel and Nancy Edison. His formal schooling was brief, and his mother became an important influence on his reading and confidence. From telegraphy to invention

As a young man Edison learned the practical culture of telegraph offices: circuits, relays, batteries, repair work and rapid experimentation. Improvements to telegraph and stock-printing equipment brought money and contacts, allowing him to move from employment into independent invention and manufacturing.

Menlo Park and the invention factory

The laboratory’s first great public sensation was the phonograph. The later recording business was not a straight line from a single 1877 machine; it involved changing recording materials, rival formats, performers, factories and listeners. Electric light and power

Edison did not invent the first electric light. His important contribution was to develop a practical incandescent lamp as part of a larger system of generators, wiring, meters, switches and commercial supply. West Orange, films and industrial research

The larger West Orange laboratory opened in the late 1880s. It supported work in recorded sound, motion pictures, batteries, mining, cement and other industries. Competition, controversy and legacy

Edison’s career included aggressive patent strategies, commercial disappointments and public disputes. The electrical conflict usually called the War of the Currents involved systems, companies and public campaigns rather than a simple personal duel.
